Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club 2005

CR finished in 2nd spot this year and was the closest Caltex League season ever with only 0.05 points between 1st & 2nd.  CR were unbeaten until the last game of the League and went down 23-15 at the hands of arch rivals Kandy Sports Club.  To go so far unbeaten and lose the last one ended the team's dream of winning the League undefeated was cruel but it ws not our year and so we look forward to 2006 and going one better.  Rugby in Sri Lanka is moving forward rapidly and boasts crowds of over 15,000 at local Top League games such as CR v Kandy or International matches leading into RWC 2007 in France.  SL v Kazakstan Saturday 12th November Longden Place KO: 4.30pm

The insitution of local players only rule this season saw more of Sri Lanka's top players getting more game time and was a real winner with the crowds and less financial impost on the clubs.  CR had some golden moments in 2005 and some of the highlights were:

  • Beating Havelocks by a record margin of 65-0
  • Beating Kandy at Londen Place in fron of a 15,000+ crowd
  • Best defensive record in the comp by a country mile
  • Winning all of our away games bar 1
