Next Time you are in Sri Lanka Surf at my Spot....

After Months and Months of waiting finally the Wannasurf crew have ratified my very own surf spot in Sri Lanka and it is official.  After enduring herendous road trips south of Colombo on any hot stinking day of the year and surfing with local mate Lal, GD's was born.  Probably should have been called Lal's Lefts but I had the vision and Lal had a beaten up twin fin thanks to the Boxing Day Tsunami, he survived and so did his board so our paths crossed back in January 2005 on my first trip to Bentota desperate not to surf alone after a 40ft freak wave hit a month earlier and the posibility of seeing the remains a victim.  I paddled out then like a monkey dropping out of tree  there was Lal with his Tsunami special twin fin under his wing.  No legrope because it was most likely being used by a local farmer to tie up his cow. 

The first thing I could remember about Lal was how black he was but had bleached yellowy hair half way down his back and of course how crap his board was.  I happened to be the first surfer he had seen since the Big Wave so I soon realised after we first spoke why he was so happy to see me.  I suppose I helped him overcome his fear a little and he mine.  I sent him back in and gave my back up board I had with me and we surfed GD's  for a few hours until the white Aussie was a Red Aussie.  In th space of a couple of hours I learnt some Sri Lankan he learnt some English and we talked Tsunami's in between sets.  Nothing like the first surf in a foreighn country to hook you even more.
